Hrist Valkyrie

Age: ?
Race: Aesir
Birthplace: Valhalla
Gender: Female
Class: Chooser of the Slain
Battle orientation: Swordsman/Archer

Hrist's role is fairly minor upon first glance. She seems nothing more than another Valkyrie - Lenneth's older sister and mistress of the Past, specifically. She is known for her ruthlessness and her loyalty to Odin, and she quite obviously despises humans, unlike her younger counterpart. She appears only twice: in the past of the Lost City of Dipan, where she is seen with earlier incarnations of Mystina, Arngrim, and Llewelyn, and then in Weeping Lily Meadow if you're lucky enough to trigger the right series of scenes. In her words, she once fought the same battle Lenneth fights now, but instead it was a battle against the forces of the undead, and Brahms in particular.

It is Hrist who eventually reveals the true nature of the Valkyries, when she awakens in Lenneth's place after Lucian's death. According to her words, the three sisters are one; they share the same body, or physical presence, and simply exist as seperate psyches within that vessel. However, once she challenges Brahms, she is soon put back to sleep by the combined efforts of the Vampire Lord, Lezard, Mystina, and Arngrim.

She has quite a grudge against Brahms. ^.^ I think it's safe to assume that her hatred of him stems from the fact that, not only is he a force against the gods, but he also holds her youngest sister (Silmeria) captive in his palace. It's understandable - as much as Hrist needs to "chill out" in the words of my friend, she has every right to be angry, and she knows it. Their confrontation is destined by fate, but it's clear that Ragnarok is not that time, as Lenneth is once again revived in her place at the time of her challenge.

In mythology:

The valkyrie in this game are a strange mix of the mythical valkyrie and the Norn sisters - shield maidens and goddesses of fate, respectively. They are completely different entities in Norse mythology. Hrist is both a valkyrie and the goddess of the Past, but that is not an accurate representation of the legends. I have further musings on that, as well as what it means for the personalities of the game's valkyries, if you're interested.

Hrist represents the Norn sister Urd, keeper of the past, known as the hag, or by similar terms. She represents wisdom, and always looks back to the past. You can see this clearly in her personality. And while she doesn't parallel a legendary figure that I know of (beyond her name), she seems to represent the original interpretation of valkyries as blood-thirsty amazon warriors who killed the heroes they thought were worthy, instead of waiting for them to die in battle. This is also reflected in her personality, to an extent.

For a contemporary equivilent, you can look at Urd of the Oh! My Goddess! series. They're very different as characters, but they reference the same entity.
