Lenneth Valkyrie

Age: 23 (Midgard reckoning)
Race: Aesir
Birthplace: Valhalla
Gender: Female
Class: Chooser of the Slain
Battle orientation: Swordsman/Archer

Lenneth is one of the three goddesses that rule fate, and it is her job to journey through Midgard and gather the souls of the heroic dead so they may fight at Odin's side during the battle of Ragnarok. She executes her job stoically; because of the nature of her task she is often regarded as a death goddess, and must fight for the cooperation of her chosen warriors.

It becomes clear at the beginning of the game that a part of Lenneth is missing, likely due to Freya's actions before her awakening. But she has no concept of this; she knows only obedience to Odin, and the power to hear the cries of tragedy from the world below. She begins her search for souls to prepare for the coming battle, and along the way, thanks to luck or some twist of fate at the hends of the other gods, she eventually discovers her recent past.

Not many years ago (two decades at the most), Lenneth was reincarnated into a human girl named Platina. She was born to a poor mother in a poor town in the north, with no other family to speak of and definitely no sign of wealth. She worked all of her life, despite constant abuse from her mother, and grew very close to Lucian as time went on - they were best friends, maybe more than that.

When Platina was sixteen, her mother sold her to slavers. She had no idea what was happening - it was Lucian who told her, climbing through her window at night to spirit her away before she could be sent into some horrible fate. They ran away from the village together in the dark forest, and only stopped when they reached Weeping Lily Meadow. Enchanted, Platina couldn't resist the urge to run into the field of flowers despite Lucian's warning, and that mistake led to her death only moments later.

Once Lenneth awakened, freed from her human form, Freya sealed the memories of that ordeal. Unhindered, our Valkyrie carried out her duty to Odin, and only later began to remember her "true self" after encounters with Lucian and Lezard. Unfortunately for her, the seal was only broken once she lost that which she held dearest - Lucian. Her recollection triggered Hrist's awakening, and only the help of Mystina, Arngrim, Lezard, and Brahms allowed her to evade the tangled web Odin had woven for her destiny and strike out on her own.

Valkyrie's true power is unknown. Although she has been healed and reunited with the other parts of her soul, the effects of her merging with the homonculus remain unseen. The destruction of Ragnarok drove Lenneth to find the power of Creation within herself, but that may not be the extent of her power. She is now able to 'grow', unlike the other gods, and only time will tell what her future holds.

In mythology:

The valkyrie in this game are a strange mix of the mythical valkyrie and the Norn sisters - shield maidens and goddesses of fate, respectively. They are completely different entities in Norse mythology. So while Lenneth is both a valkyrie and the goddess of the Present, that is not an accurate representation of the legends. I have further musings on that, as well as what it means for the personalities of the game's valkyries, if you're interested.

Lenneth resembles two mythical figures: Verthandi, the goddess of the present, and also Brynhild of the Nibelungenlied. She is the middle sister, and from what we can judge, her temperment reflects that. Her relation to Verthandi speaks for itself; Brynhild is known for falling in love with a human and defying Odin's will.

If you want a contemporary figure to compare her to, take a look at the Oh! My Goddess! series - she would match up with Belldandy. But the resemblence only goes as far as the reference, as the two are very different in every other respect.

Voice: English
